Match ReportSaul U-12 boys had a competitive away match at St John’s on Sunday. Playing in breezy conditions the boys performed well and earned their victory. Rory Fitzsimmons opened the scoring with a free and this was quickly added to with a superb goal by Caolan Magee. Saul were commanding around midfield and Gordon Rourke added to Saul’s tally with a brilliant point. Saul’s defence produced a terrific first half display and set-up the lively Caolan Magee again who fired in another goal. Just before half-time Lorcan Harney created space and scored a great point to leave Saul eight points ahead at half time. Like on so many other occasions Saul went to sleep at the start of the second half and St John’s took full advantage and quickly scored 2-1 to leave just a point between the sides. Saul’s defence began to re-assert control and the tenacious Lorcan Harney kicked over two more points to leave a goal between the sides. The half back-line of Pierce Laverty, James Gordon and Cormac Coulter fought for every ball and supplied Mark McGrady with a lot of possession which lead to a Caolan Magee point. The full-back line took control after a shaky start to the second half. Saul made a number of changes and Conor McGrady turned in a good performance in attack. The tireless work rate of Gordon Rourke paid dividends with the final point of the game. The man of the match award goes to Pierce Laverty who won every ball in defence and never wasted possession. The final score was St John’s 2-2 -v- Saul 2-7. This was a great team effort with everyone playing their part. Training continues on Thursday (6.15 - 7.30pm) with an away match against Loughinisland next Sunday.
