Sunday night in Saval and a batch-load of county titles were up for grabs in the Down County Scor-na-nog final with Saul able to make a strong play for 3 of them. First up for Saul were the Instrumental Musicians of Sarah McVeigh, Cristina Holland, Michael McMullan plus Paul and Brian Riordan and after an excellent performance the audience feel was that they had certainly pushed favourites Castlewellan all the way - unfortunately it wasn't to be though as the adjudicators awarded the title to the town musicians. Next up were the Ballad Group as reigning county champions and Grainne Laverty, Nicole Leung-Soon, Sarah McVeigh, Cristina Holland and Roisin Sloan put in 2 flawless and polished performances that had a hushed audience enjoying every note and when Saul were announced as county champions it was no surprise to the packed gathering. Finally for Saul came the Novelty Act and the Saul actors of Niall Laverty, Sarah McVeigh, Grainne Laverty, Nicole Leung-Soon, Orla Holland, Roisin Sloan, Owen McVeigh and Cristina Holland had improved their performance even further from the East Down final to have the Saval audience creased in laughter to the exploits of Daniel O'Donnell, the Down Angel, Cynthia and the Rose of Tralee's and Delaney's Donkey with some Father Ted thrown in for good measure. When the results were announced though, the title was given to Rostrevor for a straight historical re-enactment which surprised most in the hall - but thats part of Scor and the Saul team can be rightly pleased with their performance which was exceptional. Overall, well done to the Saul Ballad Group and all the other Down champions on the night who all go onto the Ulster Semi Final in Swatragh, Derry on Friday, December 7th starting at 8pm. Saul will be well represented again in support of your efforts.
